Why Heritage Windows Are Worth Restoring

The wood-framed windows found in Ottawa's older homes were typically built from old-growth lumber, a material that is denser, more dimensionally stable, and more resistant to rot than the wood available today. A heritage window that has lasted 80 or 100 years often has more remaining life in it than a brand-new vinyl replacement, provided the underlying structure is sound and the right restoration work is done.

What Heritage Window Restoration Involves

Wood repair and stabilization. Sections of the frame or sash that have softened, split, or started to rot are repaired or replaced with matching wood. Where possible, we preserve the original material rather than removing it entirely. Localized repairs maintain the window's authenticity while eliminating the structural weakness.

Glazing compound restoration. The putty that holds the glass in place dries out, cracks, and falls away over time. Failing glazing allows moisture to reach the wood and compromises the seal around the glass. We remove the old compound, prepare the surface, and apply new glazing to restore a weathertight seal.

Hardware repair and replacement. Sash locks, lifts, pulleys, chains, and balances wear out or seize with age. We repair or replace hardware to restore smooth operation. When original-style hardware is required to maintain the window's period-correct appearance, we source components that match.

Sash cord and balance restoration. In double-hung heritage windows, the sash is held in position by a weight-and-cord or spring balance system. Broken cords or failed balances are one of the most common reasons a heritage window will not stay open or close properly. We replace these components to restore reliable function.

Weatherstripping and draft sealing. Older windows were not always weatherstripped from the factory, and any original weatherstripping is likely long past its useful life. Adding or replacing weatherstripping dramatically improves comfort and energy performance without altering the window's appearance or operation.

Glass replacement. Cracked, chipped, or broken panes are replaced with glass matched to the original thickness and profile. For windows with textured, wavy, or specialty glass, we source appropriate replacements that maintain the visual character.

Cedar Window Restoration

Cedar-framed windows are common in certain eras of Ottawa residential construction and are prized for their natural resistance to moisture and decay. Even cedar breaks down eventually, though, particularly on south-facing and west-facing exposures where UV and weather exposure are highest. We restore cedar windows with attention to the specific properties of the wood, using compatible materials and techniques that preserve the natural grain and finish.

Heritage windows that were upgraded to double-pane sealed units at some point can develop the same fogging and condensation issues as any other insulated window. What to Expect

1. Contact us with a description of your windows and what you are seeing. Photos of the window condition, both interior and exterior, help us understand the scope before we visit.
2. On-site assessment. We inspect each window individually, evaluating the frame, sash, hardware, glazing, and glass. We provide an honest assessment of what can be restored and what, if anything, may need to be replaced.
3. Restoration plan. Based on the assessment, we outline the specific work each window requires and provide a clear quote.
4. The work. Depending on the scope, restoration may be completed on-site or may require the sash to be removed and taken to our shop for more detailed work before being reinstalled.
5. Final inspection. Every restored window is tested for smooth operation, proper sealing, and secure locking before the job is considered complete.
